Neurofeedback Equipment for Meditation and Hypnosis

Some of the more common uses for neurofeedback equipment are helping people clinically for issues like ADHD, anxiety, insomnia, and depression.  I am going to discuss two other applications that might not be as common.  Meditation has been around for a long time.  Many people practice meditation.  Many others don’t think that they can meditate.  Some have tried unsuccessfully.  There are various types of meditation practices.  One type of meditation is guided, where the meditator follows a series of guided imagery instructions to help to put them into a relaxed state.  Another type of meditation is silent.  The meditator sits quietly, allowing their minds to be quiet as much as possible.  They are not expected to not think at all.  They are just instructed not to intentionally think and to allow any thoughts that do come up to pass.  More time between thoughts seems to be a goal of this type of meditation.

Using neurofeedback equipment, you can monitor the brain waves (Alpha and Theta) that should increase when a person is a meditative state.  While you are actively thinking, your brain produces less Alpha and Theta.  When your brain is in more of a resting state, it produces more Alpha and Theta.   The instrument produces a specific sound which serves as reinforcement feedback that notifies you that your brain is moving into the meditative state.  Hearing that sound more often lets you know that you are staying in that meditative state.  Practicing this type of training over several sessions can help you be able to sense internally when you are shifting into the meditative state.  Eventually you will be able to do it more easily without the equipment.

Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Training for APA Continuing Education Credit | Biofeedback Training Houston

Unique Training Options for APA Continuing Education Credit

Many psychologists in the United States of America are required to take training to keep up with new developments in the field and to remind them of things that they may have learned a long time ago.

There are many options for training including face to face programs, online programs, and material that psychologists can read. There are also many different topics that can be studied. As long as you have to take training you might as well make it something interesting, enjoyable, and useful. Biofeedback and neurofeedback are subjects that check all of those boxes. Psychologists tend to do a lot of talking and paperwork as a part of their routine. Some of this can become monotonous.

https://youtu.be/FuonzxaUPqI

Biofeedback and Neurofeedback introduce technology that helps the clients of psychologists to learn about themselves.

It helps them to learn how to make real physiological measurable changes. They can learn to change how their body reacts to stress using biofeedback. They can train their brain to become more regulated through neurofeedback.

Theoretical Implications of Neurofeedback Integrating Bowen Theory

Theoretical Implications of Neurofeedback Integrating Bowen Theory

Andrea Maloney-Schara, LCSWA

11/4/97

Simple statements often conceal a great deal of complexity. The notion that the brain learns from experience is one such statement. The brain develops the internal connections by fitting with the external world. Learning then can be defined as the struggle to make sense of human interactions. The efforts to integrate feeling and thinking, or values and impulses, are what gives each person their own unique self. Reflecting on much of life’s experience, furthers one’s goal and thereby enables humans to escape a deterministic world.

PET scans, MRI and EEG look at evidence that the brain does reflect the nature of relationship sensitivity, physical and emotional challenges and eons of evolution. For the EEG one arena, sleep states; have been very well documented. Eventually waking states of conscious will be as well investigated.

As in many areas of medicine much has been learned from symptoms. Diseases have taught us about the functioning of the different parts of the brain. Neither of the brain’s two information systems, chemical nor electrical has a one to one correspondence with functional states in the human. Rather the state of the body reflects the overall adaptation that any individual has made. Certain areas bind anxiety, and no one area can reflect a life history. An EEG may give us more insight into the overall way that feelings and thinking have been integrated and how we pay attention.

In 1929, Hans Berger measured the brain’s electrical activity. The activity was recorded in the form of line waves and now these same waves can be fed back to the brain as information. EEG Neurofeedback is a relatively new discipline that enables us to understand how the brain functions and also promotes the brain’s ability to learn from observing itself.

Neurofeedback has been documented to be useful for serious symptoms. People have been able to function after sever head trauma. Epileptics have been taught to reduce the severity and numbers of seizures. Headaches, and other types of physical pain, have been reduced. In addition to physical symptoms, emotional and physical symptoms, such as ADD, have been reported to decrease by Lubar, Tansy and others. There are a wide number of manufactures of equipment and most have reported positive results in working with various symptom groups.

Bowen Theory can go beyond symptoms to look at the relationship’s system and promote a larger systems view of EEG and the role of learning in an emotional system. Symptom reduction may simply be the evidence needed to show that EEG has merit. In the future EEG may in fact be a window to open the door to a broader systems perspective on the way in which relationship energy impacts of functioning.

Bowen Theory points to the fact that an individual function as a part of an emotional system. The fact that anxiety can be spread from one individual to another testifies to the increasing interest in self-regulation and self help. Individuals realize that anxiety is part of being alive in a relationship’s system and that altering the tendency to absorb others anxiety for the pleasure of being in positive relationships with another is often not worth the price that will be paid

The thesis would be that relationship’s systems organize the interplay of physical and emotional energy so that individuals within that system can live and work in some degree of harmony. The EEG is a tool, which can momentarily promote an increase in functioning in one individual. The relationship system will adjust. The individual must be strong enough to manage the resistance to change within the system. If this can be accomplished over time then other people who are emotionally linked will also be able to do better. The family as an emotional system maintains certain patter of relationships, which then reinforce broad patterns of brain wave activity.

At the most basic level EEG neurofeedback teaches motor skills and mental flexibility. Individuals can learn a variety of focused states plus enhance the ability to reflect on the consequences of particular thinking patterns. The training teaches the individual to enhance or inhibit certain brain wave patterns. Learning occurs through feedback which rewards increased self-control. The brain waves are seen as waves or as bars or graphs on a computer. Sensory feedback teaches the brain faster than the conscious mind can learn. Just watching and noticing how what one thinks or does effects the feedback this type of leaning appears to remain after one session. Leaning in this case may mean that the individual has less pain or more energy.

The individual who has a positive mental/physical experience may be learning to pay attention at multiple levels of awareness. For example, the thalamus may have received new messages and the basic rhythm of the system may be altered. New peptides may be produced. New information will be circulating. No one has the necessary evidence, the blood work, gene testing, pet scans, etc. to say for sure just what systems are changed by the EEG experience. Over time the individual has a greater ability to change automatic reactions to stimulus in the relationship system. For many people just this experience is enough to make a significant functional change possibly.

Neurofeedback Equipment for Mental Health

Mental health symptoms and solutions are being openly discussed more than ever.  Most days that I turn on the news I hear at least one story related to mental health.  Just today I heard a report about three separate people who were survivors or a relative of a survivor of a school shooting who committed suicide.  We often hear reports of the devastation across the country related to abuse of opioid drugs.  Concussions caused by car accidents, slip and falls, sports injuries cause memory loss, behavior and mood changes as well as other problems.
People are being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and prescribed medications that may have to be taken for the rest of their lives with potential side effects.
Neurofeedback equipment is being used as one therapy modality that can help with many mental health conditions.  Healthcare professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, mental health counselors, social workers, nurses, chiropractors are using neurofeedback adjunctively with other therapies to help people with many of these mental health problems.  For more information on conditions that neurofeedback therapy is used for refer to Comprehensive Neurofeedback Bibliography D. Corydon Hammond, PhD.
The electrical signals that are produced by the brain are measured using a device attached to the person by sensors placed on the head.  The signals are separated into Delta, Theta, Alpha, (SMR) Sensory Motor Rhythm, Beta, and Gamma.  During an assessment it is determined if there are imbalances in the brainwave activity.  The same or similar neurofeedback equipment is then used to measure, give visual and or auditory feedback, and train the brain to produce more regulated or “normal” electrical patterns.
This usually will help to decrease the types of mental health symptoms mentioned earlier.
As an example, a person suffering with anxiety may show a pattern of higher than expected high frequency beta wave activity which is associated with over thinking and worry.  They may also show lower levels of alpha than normally expected.  Alpha is associated with a relaxed state so if their alpha level is low then they would probably not feel relaxed.
In this case the protocol on the neurofeedback equipment would be set up to encourage the brain to produce less of the high frequency beta and more of the lower frequency alpha.  The encouragement for the brain is the visual and or audio feedback which is a signal that the desired brain pattern is happening at that moment.  As soon as the conditions are no longer being met the feedback or reinforcement stops.  In this way the reward or lack of reward trains the brain to produce the desired pattern more often.  After a while this pattern that is being reinforced becomes more normal and occurs more often for the person even when they are not actively receiving feedback and they are not connected to the instrument.  This is a non-invasive therapy that has been used effectively for several mental health conditions for decades.

Neurofeedback and Lyme’s Disease, Neurofeedback Training

A Clinical Application of the Five Phase Model of CNS Functional Transformation and Integration

Neurofeedback has generated enormous interest recently, especially in regards to ameliorating the effects of immune system involved disorders like Lyme’s Disease. Although Neurofeedback itself does not mitigate the disease processes that are responsible for immune system involved disorders, it can be quite helpful at restoring functional levels in affected individuals. In particular, sleep disturbance, mood disturbance, and increased fatigue, as well as poor concentration and diminished attentional abilities, all show remarkable restoration with effective neurofeedback. However, neurofeedback with immune system disorders is an even more recent development than neurofeedback with other more “traditional” disorders such as attention deficit disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.

One of the major difficulties in the rapidly emerging field of neurofeedback is the wealth of unintegrated clinical and research findings. This plethora of intriguing data currently lacks a systematic approach that will allow neurofeedback clinicians to apply the incredible power of this technology with precision across a range of diverse http://disorders.At present, intriguing bits of clinical wisdom float about chaotically, while practitioners have little sense of how to integrate these various nuggets into a comprehensive approach to restoring and optimizing CNS function. Having been engaged in the provision of neurofeedback across a wide variety of disorders, it became apparent to me that a comprehensive framework is necessary so that we can treat the person who has the disorder, and not chase the tail of the disorder that has the person. Fortunately, with a rigorous enough examination of the clinical wisdom that abounds in the literature currently, such a comprehensive and integrated framework suggests itself naturally. The present article will discuss this central idea as well as several main conclusions that flow from it, including the following.
  • A single, overarching Five Phase Model of CNS Functional Transformation exists which can integrate the various current neurofeedback protocols into a singular and comprehensive approach. This comprehensive framework can be used regardless of the particular disorder being treated. All clients begin with the same protocol and progress through each phase at their own pace, as determined by changes is functional status, as well as in more quantifiable shifts in E.E.G., especially as seen in spectral analysis.
  • A single, referential sensor placement at Cz is used for the majority of treatments, except for the last phase in which a four channel, global synchrony setup is necessary. This simple approach demonstrates equal or better clinical efficacy when compared to more diverse and varied hook ups.
  • The older terms of Alpha, Theta and Beta are no longer precise enough to guide clinical work and need to be replaced with more specific frequency based descriptors.
  • The functional limitations associated with immune systems involved disorders like Lyme’s Disease, CFIDS, and PMS respond well to the Five Phase Model of CNS Functional Transformation

Adding The Intelligence of the Heart in Performance Enhancement Training

Introduction
For centuries the heart has been considered the source of emotion, courage and wisdom. Neurocardiology is the relatively new science of exploring the physiological mechanisms by which the heart communicates with the brain; thereby influencing information processing, perceptions, emotions and health.

Neurocardiology asks questions such as: Why do people experience the feeling or sensation of love and other positive emotional states in the area of the heart, and what are the physiological ramifications of these emotions? How do stress and different emotional states affect the autonomic nervous system, the hormonal and immune systems, the heart and brain?

Over the years scientists have experimented with different psychological and physiological measures, but consistently heart rate variability, or heart rhythms, stands out as one of the most dynamic and reflective measures of inner emotional states and stress.

It is clear that negative emotions lead to increased disorder in the heart’s rhythms and in the autonomic nervous system, thereby adversely affecting the rest of the body. In contrast, positive emotions create increased harmony and coherence in heart rhythms, and improve balance in the nervous system. The health implications are easy to understand. Disharmony in the nervous system leads to inefficiency and increased stress on the heart and other organs, while harmonious rhythms are more efficient and less stressful to the body’s systems.

Neurofeedback Equipment for Professional and Home Use

Devices for measuring and giving feedback of EEG brainwave activity is not new. Some have been available commercially since the 1970s. The first one that I was introduced to was housed in a wooden box and had an analog meter, a training frequency selector for Alpha, Theta, or Beta, a threshold setting, and audio feedback -very simple. It did not interface with a computer and there was no data storage or report available. This was around 1985. Since then much has changed. Those devices began to be interfaced with computers for better feedback and the added capabilities of data storage and reports.

Other systems have come along that only work with a computer with no feedback on the device that you plug the sensor cables into. Now there are some that work with smart phones and tablets like one called The Muse.

Though the early systems recorded from only one site on the head at a time, now many of the professional systems record 19 or more sites simultaneously like the Brainmaster Discovery.
Professional neurofeedback equipment is classified by the FDA as a class 2 medical device and can only be purchased by a licensed healthcare professional or on the order of one for a patient to use at home under supervision. Other neurofeedback equipment is designed for use by non-professionals and are not intended to treat any medical or mental health conditions. They are only to be used for relaxation and education purposes.

Professional neurofeedback equipment is made by reputable companies that have registered with the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) so that they can legally sell the equipment. As a licensed healthcare professional you would not want to use equipment with your clients that is not legal.
