Joe Kamiya Ph.D, discovered EEG Neurofeedback in 1959. This incredible learning technology developed gradually until about 1990. Since then, interest has surged providing opportunity for thousands of health care and educational professionals. Many of the practitioners we have trained have found EEG Neurofeedback to be so effective and widely applicable that it has become the most important strategy of their practice, adjunctive to almost all of the clinical and educational therapies they use.

Because EEG Neurofeedback influences the Central Nervous System and the CNS affects everything else, a growing number of world class scientists and practitioners are suggesting that the emergence of EEG Neurofeedback may be one of the most important developments in health care and education of our time. The extraordinary possibilities implied by the evolution of EEG Neurofeedback are generating escalating international enthusiasm and research.

This competency based curriculum includes practical, easily learnable strategies which may be used with virtually all of the most common EEG Neurofeedback applications. Designed to give the practitioner the knowledge and tools needed in order to rapidly achieve clinical and economic success in EEG Neurofeedback, this program emphasizes those neurofeedback adjunctive applications for which there is the greatest demand, including but not limited to: ADD / ADHD / Conduct Disorder & other Learning disabilities, Autism Disorders, Substance Abuse, eating disorders and addictive behaviors, PTSD, Multiple Personality Disorder, Depression, Behavioral and Stress Related Disorders, Anxiety / Panic Attacks, Pain Management, Chronic Pain, headaches (Migraine and Tension), RSD, Fibromyalgia, Phantom Limb etc., Adult and childhood sleep disorders, Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke Rehabilitation, Dementia (non-Alzheimer’s), Epilepsy, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and MindFitness® Life / Performance Enhancement.

Quick & Easy Stress Reduction Solutions – Part 2

Spending Time in Nature

In my last article I discussed the importance of learning simple stress management solutions that you can use easily in everyday life situations. Life is complicated and we are all very busy. It can seem difficult to find extended amounts of time to practice relaxation exercises. I presented my first simple stress solution which was using essential oils. https://biofeedbackinternational.com/quick-easy-stress-reduction-solutions-part-1/#more-3634

Stress Reduction Solution #2 is Spending Time in Nature

There are not too many things that are more relaxing than spending time outdoors on a day when the weather is just right. When you add to that being near the ocean, a lake or river, and maybe even a waterfall it makes it even better. Vacation spots near the water are among the most popular destinations because people seem to have a natural desire to be near the water when they want to relax.

Other outdoor activities like hiking and camping are also very popular ways people spend time in the great outdoors. Homeowners even spend a lot of time and money to make the space around their houses more comfortable so that they can spend time outside.

A March 30, 2017 article based on research at Brighton and Sussex Medical School showed that playing nature sounds caused changes in the bodily systems that run the flight-or-fright and rest-digest autonomic nervous systems, including effects that evidence resting activity in the brain.Dr. Cassandra Gould van Praag said, “We are all familiar with the feeling of relaxation and ‘switching-off’ which comes from a walk in the countryside, and now we have evidence from the brain and the body which helps us understand this effect.”

I came across another article from NBC News that referenced other research about the benefits of spending time in nature. Here says Irina Wen, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and clinical director of the Steven A. Military Family Clinic at NYU Langone Medical Center says “Nature can be beneficial for mental health,”. “It reduces cognitive fatigue and stress and can be helpful with depression and anxiety.”

Quick & Easy Stress Reduction Solutions – Part 1

Stress is a real problem that we must all deal with every day of our lives. We cannot afford to ignore it because it has real negative effects on our health, relationships, performance, work, and lives in general. I discussed much of this in book, What Stress Can Do, (available on www.createspace.com/3839220 ).

My next goal is to give people simple stress solutions so that you can quickly and without much effort rid yourself of the problems stress could cause in your life.

Some stress management programs require a lot of time, commitment, and expense which discourages many people from using them. People want things that work fast and don’t take much effort. That is one of the reasons that medications are so popular. Just take a pill and get better is the message. Don’t worry about the long list of potential side effects. Don’t worry about having to continue to take the medication over a long period of time, maybe for the rest of your life.

It can be more effective to go into in-depth training for stress management but if you are not willing to stick with it then you won’t benefit from it. This is where many people find themselves. I want you to have several tools that you can use quickly and regularly without working too hard so that you will actually do it and stick with it. These tools work. Use them and gain control over stress. Share them with your family and friends. Notice the changes in your health, the changes in your life, your work, and relationships. After a period of putting these tools into practice you will probably have people in your life comment on the changes they see in you. They will say things like “How can you be so calm while this is going on?”.

Solution #1 – Essential Oils

What could be easier than putting a couple of drops of oil in your palms, rubbing them together, cupping your hands together around your nose, and then inhaling? It takes only a few seconds to do this and the scent reaches and stimulates your brain almost instantly through your sense of smell. You can also rub the oils on certain areas of your body including the wrists, the temples, earlobes, or neck.

Celebrity Suicides Bring Light To A Hidden Problem

On June 5, 2018 fashion designer Kate Spade hung herself.  Her husband Andy said, “Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years.  The most recent stressor may have been her husband filing for divorce after 24 years of marriage.  This led to severe depression according to a Page-6 article by Yaron Steinbuch.

Soon after the death of Kate Spade Anthony Bourdain, celebrity cook, best-selling author of Kitchen Confidential and star of TV series A Cook’s Tour, and Parts Unknown, was found dead in a Paris hotel room.  He also apparently hung himself.

Here are some statistics from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:

It is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States of America

44,965 Americans die each year in the USA

For each actual death there are another 25 attempts

The costs to the USA is $69 Billion annually

One of the statistics that surprised me is that 7 out of 10 people who killed themselves in 2016 were white males.  This seems unusual in a way because this is the group that appears to be the most privileged in America.  You would think that they would have the least reason to want to kill themselves.  This brings to mind the saying that money doesn’t buy happiness.

Another disturbing statistic is related to deaths in the military.  More service members are killing themselves than are dying in combat.  Give that a minute to sink in.  According to the AFSP there were 295 combat-related deaths in the year 2012, which is a terrible loss of life.  Even worse though, in that same year were 349 service people killed themselves.  They also state that 20% of all suicides are committed by veterans.  Obviously, the military is not looking to broadcast this information.  It could have a negative effect on the morale of service people and public support, as well as for recruitment and retention.

APA Continuing Education

The American Psychological Association administers a program to provide credits for psychologists that are required by some states to maintain their licenses.  There are some topics like ethics, that might seem not to be very interesting to some people but are important and required.  There are also other topics that psychologists might find of personal interest like learning a new skill or testing method.

APA continuing education training is available in different formats which have pros and cons.

Books, newsletters, and articles are low tech and may be considered old-school.  They are also low cost, simple, and you can go at your own pace for the most part.  After you read the material you take an exam to make sure that you comprehend it.

Online and video on demand courses offer a higher tech experience than books, newsletters, and articles.  Online courses can provide interaction between instructor and students as well as use of graphics, video, live image of instructor, and audio.  This can make the experience much more engaging.  Although on demand courses do not provide live interaction with the instructor since the material is pre-recorded they do provide a similar higher tech experience with graphics video, and audio, etc.
