Neurofeedback Training New York

Neurofeedback training is available from many providers in some parts of New York but still is not widely available in other parts of the state.  Manhattan has several providers.  There are some in Westchester County and others in Long Island and Queens.  They are much more rare in other areas like Upstate New York.

Some resources for finding providers include the Northeast Regional Biofeedback Society (nrbs.org), The Association for Applied Psychophysiology & Biofeedback (aapb.org) and the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (bcia.org)  Each website has a listing of providers that you can search by region.  These can be an excellent resource for people looking for providers of neurofeedback training in New York as well as for professionals considering becoming a provider.  They can see where there is more competition and where there is more need and opportunity.

Neurofeedback training can be provided by licensed medical and mental healthcare providers who have the proper additional education and experience.  The best evidence for qualification is certification by BCIA (Biofeedback Certification International Alliance) which establishes requirements including education, experience, mentoring, and examination.  In addition to prerequisite education applicants also need to complete a 36 hour course in neurofeedback that trains them in all of the necessary basic information they should know to provide neurofeedback.  They also need to evidence that they have completed a course in neuroanatomy.

The experience portion requires the applicant to complete 100 sessions of neurofeedback on clients and 10 on themselves plus review of the experience work with an experienced mentor.  This process gives the applicant a much better chance of being successful at providing neurofeedback training to their clients.

As advanced as New York is in many ways, it would seem that we would have more health care providers offering neurofeedback as a therapy to their clients.  Even in New York there is still a relative shortage of neurofeedback providers.

Some of the problems that neurofeedback is helpful for include ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder), Anxiety, Insomnia, Depression, and Substance Abuse.  ADHD has been a very popular application for many years.  There had been a surge in use in the 1990s with the cocaine epidemic  and now I am expecting another increase with the more recent opioid crisis.  If neurofeedback is proven to be effective for helping people with opioid addictions then it could become as big as the ADHD application.  I hope to see more health care providers offering neurofeedback therapy  to people in New York who need it.

Procomp2|Biofeedback resources international

The ProComp2 is a compact yet powerful 2 channel biofeedback / neurofeedback system. You can monitor and record simultaneously using the BioGraph Infiniti software.

The ProComp 2 comes ready to measure a single channel of EEG with one built in EEG channel. This system can measure 2 channels of biofeedback or neurofeedback at one time. Add a second EEG for a state of the art two channel neurofeedback system.

The ProComp2™ is a compact yet powerful 2 channel device that allows clinicians to set up a second clinical system — or to empower their clients by offering them a take-home device that is convenient to wear on a headband or a shirt collar.

The ProComp2™ contains a built-in EEG sensor (simply connect an extender cable for EEG monitoring and biofeedback), and it can use any two of the ProComp Infiniti™ sensors. The ProComp2™ system contains all the peripherals to easily connect it to a desktop or laptop IBM-compatible PC.

Biofeedback Equipment, 5 Things You Need to Know

Are you thinking of getting biofeedback equipment?  Here are 5 things you need to know.

  1. What is it measuring? Biofeedback instruments may measure different things.  All biofeedback instruments are not the same.  There are different modalities that can be measured including surface EMG for muscle tension, Skin Temperature, Skin Conductance, Respiration, Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, EEG, and CO2 (Capnometry).  Some biofeedback equipment measures only one of these modalities.  Others may measure up to 10 separate channels at the same time.
  1. Do I have a reliable signal? The feedback that the instrument provides is only as good as the quality of the signal.  If the signal is not accurate it is not a good representation of the changes happening in the body.  Some biofeedback equipment makes it easy to see the quality of the signal.  Other instruments may hide the actual signal and only show you a game or give you sound that is supposed to be reacting to the signal.

  1. Can I tell if I am doing better? The feedback needs to be clear for learning to occur.  It is very basic but, if not done correctly, it is hard to tell what you are really doing.  If you are using temperature biofeedback and the goal is to increase the temperature, the feedback should clearly let you know if your temperature is increasing or not.  If the goal is to relax your muscles, you should be able to clearly tell when your muscle tension is decreasing or not.
  1. What kind of support is available? There are some biofeedback equipment manufacturers that have been around for over 40 years. There are others that make a big splash and then disappear. Some are known for excellent support and with others it is almost impossible to speak to a person at all to get help. Make sure to learn what you can about the company and how their support works.
  1. Does a person have to use biofeedback equipment forever? Biofeedback allows you to train your physiology so that you learn greater awareness and control of the changes that happen within your body. The more you practice, the less you should need the equipment. Eventually, you should be able to use the sensations within your body to be aware of the changes. At that point you don’t need the equipment anymore but, it can still be useful to test yourself occasionally to see if you have retained what you learned.

Mindfield® eSense Skin Response

The Mindfield® eSense Skin Response is a small sensor to measure your skin conductance using two electrodes and the microphone input of your smartphone or tablet (Android or Apple iOS.)

Your skin conductance depends directly on your state of relaxation or stress, making it a commonly used and very precise stress indicator. With the eSense Skin Response, you can precisely identify your stress level and reduce it with biofeedback training.

A free app is included to display your skin conductance in multiple ways. You can export the measured data via e-mail.

Skin response, also known as galvanic skin response (GSR), electrodermal response (EDR) or skin conductance (SC) is a method for measuring the skin’s electrical conductance, which varies with its moisture level. Conductance is measured in µSiemens (µS) and is the inverse of electrical resistance.

The eSense Skin Response measures skin conductance between two Velcro electrodes attached to two adjacent fingers. Active measurement involves applying a very low, unnoticeable voltage to the fingers.
