Biofeedback Training Miami

This year I started a project of reaching out to all of the HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).  I want to find out if they are using biofeedback and neurofeedback.  I am interested to find out how many of them are using biofeedback and how they are using it.  If they are not already using biofeedback, I want to introduce it to them and help them begin to find out the ways it can be used.

I have started with the states closest to New York since that is where I am.  This is also where we do most of our training.  I am looking at the schools in Florida next since we have also been doing biofeedback and neurofeedback training in Miami, Florida for many years.

I looked at the list of HBCU institutions in Florida and found that there are four listed as being located in the state of Florida; Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, and Florida Memorial University in Miami.

Since the other schools are between 260 and 480 miles from Miami, I will start by contacting Florida Memorial University in Miami and then continue with contacting the other institutions.

I have been involved with providing biofeedback equipment and training and doing presentations on stress management and physiological monitoring at many colleges and universities.  The universities I have worked with include Pace, NYU, Yale, NC State, Rutgers, Brooklyn College, Denison, Drury, Otterbein, Bradley, University of Colorado, Idaho State University, Seton Hall, Fordham, Campbell, and Vanderbilt University.

Neurofeedback training is available from many providers in some parts of New York but still is not widely available in other parts of the state.  Manhattan has several providers.  There are some in Westchester County and others in Long Island and Queens.  They are much more rare in other areas like Upstate New York.

Some resources for finding providers include the Northeast Regional Biofeedback Society (nrbs.org), The Association for Applied Psychophysiology & Biofeedback (aapb.org) and the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (bcia.org)  Each website has a listing of providers that you can search by region.  These can be an excellent resource for people looking for providers of neurofeedback training in New York as well as for professionals considering becoming a provider.  They can see where there is more competition and where there is more need and opportunity.

Neurofeedback training can be provided by licensed medical and mental healthcare providers who have the proper additional education and experience.  The best evidence for qualification is certification by BCIA (Biofeedback Certification International Alliance) which establishes requirements including education, experience, mentoring, and examination.  In addition to prerequisite education applicants also need to complete a 36 hour course in neurofeedback that trains them in all of the necessary basic information they should know to provide neurofeedback.  They also need to evidence that they have completed a course in neuroanatomy.

The experience portion requires the applicant to complete 100 sessions of neurofeedback on clients and 10 on themselves plus review of the experience work with an experienced mentor.  This process gives the applicant a much better chance of being successful at providing neurofeedback training to their clients.

Self-Regulation: It’s a Mind-Body Thing

 

Self-regulation is an important skill that allows people to manage their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors effectively. What is self-regulation?  It is the ability to have control over oneself, to resist impulsive actions, and to make decisions that line up with long-term goals and values. This valuable skill is a foundation of personal success and well-being, affecting many areas of life, including relationships, academics, career, and overall happiness.

As we become more overwhelmed with information and the speed of life increases, self-regulation is becoming increasingly important. The ability to delay gratification, stay focused, and persevere through challenges is crucial for meeting our goals. Those who have good self-regulation skills are better able to handle stress, overcome obstacles, and adapt to new situations.

One of the fundamental components of self-regulation is emotional regulation. It involves recognizing and managing emotions in a positive way. By understanding and regulating their emotions, people can avoid impulsive reactions, make good decisions, and maintain healthier relationships. People who are emotionally regulated have more empathy, compassion, and are capable of solving conflicts effectively.

Self-regulation also includes cognitive regulation. It involves monitoring and controlling one’s thoughts, attention, and mental processes. By working on building cognitive regulation skills, people can improve their ability to concentrate, think critically, and solve problems. This skill allows individuals to set realistic goals, plan, and effectively manage their time and resources.

Also, self-regulation plays a crucial role in behavioral regulation. It involves managing one’s actions, impulses, and behaviors. Individuals with strong behavioral regulation skills can resist temptations, control their impulses, and make choices that align with their long-term goals. This ability to regulate behavior promotes self-discipline, perseverance, and responsible decision-making.

In addition, self-regulation is a skill that can be developed and improved with practice. Strategies such as mindfulness meditation, goal setting, self-reflection, and self-monitoring can improve self-regulation abilities.

Biofeedback is a tool that allows a person to learn how to regulate how their mind and body interact.  The interaction goes both ways.  What you think affects your body and what your body is doing can affect your mind and how you feel.
