Optimizing Athletic Performance: Using Biofeedback in Sports Medicine

In the competitive world of sports medicine, every edge counts. Athletes and sports professionals are increasingly turning to biofeedback—a cutting-edge, science-backed technique that enhances body awareness and control. By monitoring and training physiological responses, biofeedback empowers athletes to optimize performance, accelerate recovery, and prevent injuries. Core modalities like surface EMG, heart rate variability (HRV), and brain wave feedback are transforming the way sports medicine practitioners support athletes in training and rehabilitation.

Surface EMG: Training Smarter, Preventing Injury

Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a type of biofeedback that measures electrical activity in muscles. In sports medicine, it is used to analyze and retrain muscle activation patterns, making it a powerful tool for injury prevention and recovery. For example, athletes recovering from ACL surgery or shoulder injuries can use sEMG to ensure they’re reactivating the right muscles at the right intensity. It also helps correct faulty neuromuscular patterns that may lead to overuse injuries.

sEMG provides real-time feedback, allowing athletes and therapists to adjust movements instantly. This level of precision not only enhances rehabilitation but also refines biomechanical efficiency, translating into better performance on the field, court, or track.

Heart Rate Variability: Mastering Stress and Endurance

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback trains athletes to regulate their autonomic nervous system—balancing stress, recovery, and cardiovascular performance. HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats, a key indicator of resilience and adaptability.

In sports medicine, HRV biofeedback is used to improve breathing control, increase stress tolerance, and enhance recovery after intense training or competition. Athletes learn to control their physiological responses under pressure, improving mental focus and physical readiness. By incorporating HRV training into their routines, athletes not only bounce back faster from workouts but also perform with greater calm and control in high-stakes situations.

Neurofeedback Equipment for Mental Health

Mental health symptoms and solutions are being openly discussed more than ever.  Most days that I turn on the news I hear at least one story related to mental health.  Just today I heard a report about three separate people who were survivors or a relative of a survivor of a school shooting who committed suicide.  We often hear reports of the devastation across the country related to abuse of opioid drugs.  Concussions caused by car accidents, slip and falls, sports injuries cause memory loss, behavior and mood changes as well as other problems.
People are being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and prescribed medications that may have to be taken for the rest of their lives with potential side effects.
Neurofeedback equipment is being used as one therapy modality that can help with many mental health conditions.  Healthcare professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, mental health counselors, social workers, nurses, chiropractors are using neurofeedback adjunctively with other therapies to help people with many of these mental health problems.  For more information on conditions that neurofeedback therapy is used for refer to Comprehensive Neurofeedback Bibliography D. Corydon Hammond, PhD.
The electrical signals that are produced by the brain are measured using a device attached to the person by sensors placed on the head.  The signals are separated into Delta, Theta, Alpha, (SMR) Sensory Motor Rhythm, Beta, and Gamma.  During an assessment it is determined if there are imbalances in the brainwave activity.  The same or similar neurofeedback equipment is then used to measure, give visual and or auditory feedback, and train the brain to produce more regulated or “normal” electrical patterns.
This usually will help to decrease the types of mental health symptoms mentioned earlier.
As an example, a person suffering with anxiety may show a pattern of higher than expected high frequency beta wave activity which is associated with over thinking and worry.  They may also show lower levels of alpha than normally expected.  Alpha is associated with a relaxed state so if their alpha level is low then they would probably not feel relaxed.
In this case the protocol on the neurofeedback equipment would be set up to encourage the brain to produce less of the high frequency beta and more of the lower frequency alpha.  The encouragement for the brain is the visual and or audio feedback which is a signal that the desired brain pattern is happening at that moment.  As soon as the conditions are no longer being met the feedback or reinforcement stops.  In this way the reward or lack of reward trains the brain to produce the desired pattern more often.  After a while this pattern that is being reinforced becomes more normal and occurs more often for the person even when they are not actively receiving feedback and they are not connected to the instrument.  This is a non-invasive therapy that has been used effectively for several mental health conditions for decades.

Is There a Neurofeedback Tsunami? (It is Synchrony.)

I think so and its name is Synchrony. Synchrony training is of great interest to many Neurofeedback practitioners. However, there seems to be a number of opinions about what synchrony means. We hope to add to the confusion by explaining our views. We will also explain why we feel synchrony training is an important part of Neurofeedback’s present and an even more important part of its future.
As multiple channel Neurofeedback systems come into fashion synchrony strategies will become critically important to this field. Stroebel, Fehmi, Green and others came to the view that there was a special relationship between EEG Synchrony and quality of some mind states in the early 70’s.
This insight came as a result of measuring the synchrony present as unusually gifted individuals demonstrated relatively high orders of perception and self-regulation.Not many are aware that the Nobel Laureate Francis Crick, coming from the traditional neuroscience “Binding” theory of consciousness, is reported to have speculated that EEG Synchrony may be an accessible and practically usable signature of consciousness. To quote from his book Astonishing Hypothesis, ” Both German groups suggested that these 40hz oscillations might be the Brain’s answer to the binding problem. They proposed that the neurons symbolizing all the different attributes of a single object (shape, color, movement, etc.) would bind these attributes to each other by firing together in synchrony.”

Now, Crick is limiting his investigation to visual awareness or “consciousness”. His notion is that synchronous firing is a way different types of neurons bind their different perceptions producing the phenomenon of consciousness. Others are signing on to this speculation. I doubt they are aware of the work that inspired the same kind of insight by early biofeedback researchers.

Our considerable experience with synchrony training has convinced us that it has substantial applications with problem patients including Alpha P and Minus types. However, we believe that synchrony will play an even greater role in Performance / Life Enhancement training. The value of right / left hemispheric synchrony training is widely recognized but less is known about rear /frontal. It is a reasonable hypothesis that rear / frontal is at least as important and relates to perception of the principle, the idea, the vision, if you will, and then the bringing of that vision into the real world, via the frontal lobes.

Neurofeedback Training,New York

Neurofeedback training is available from many providers in some parts of New York but still is not widely available in other parts of the state. Manhattan has several providers. There are some in Westchester County and others in Long Island and Queens. They are much more rare in other areas like Upstate New York.

Some resources for finding providers include the Northeast Regional Biofeedback Society (nrbs.org), The Association for Applied Psychophysiology & Biofeedback (aapb.org) and the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (bcia.org) Each website has a listing of providers that you can search by region. These can be an excellent resource for people looking for providers of neurofeedback training in New York as well as for professionals considering becoming a provider. They can see where there is more competition and where there is more need and opportunity.

Neurofeedback training can be provided by licensed medical and mental healthcare providers who have the proper additional education and experience. The best evidence for qualification is certification by BCIA (Biofeedback Certification International Alliance) which establishes requirements including education, experience, mentoring, and examination.  In addition to prerequisite education applicants also need to complete a 36 hour course in neurofeedback that trains them in all of the necessary basic information they should know to provide neurofeedback. They also need to evidence that they have completed a course in neuroanatomy.

The experience portion requires the applicant to complete 100 sessions of neurofeedback on clients and 10 on themselves plus review of the experience work with an experienced mentor. This process gives the applicant a much better chance of being successful at providing neurofeedback training to their clients.

Celebrity Suicides Bring Light To A Hidden Problem

On June 5, 2018 fashion designer Kate Spade hung herself.  Her husband Andy said, “Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years.  The most recent stressor may have been her husband filing for divorce after 24 years of marriage.  This led to severe depression according to a Page-6 article by Yaron Steinbuch.

Soon after the death of Kate Spade Anthony Bourdain, celebrity cook, best-selling author of Kitchen Confidential and star of TV series A Cook’s Tour, and Parts Unknown, was found dead in a Paris hotel room.  He also apparently hung himself.

Here are some statistics from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention:

It is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States of America

44,965 Americans die each year in the USA

For each actual death there are another 25 attempts

The costs to the USA is $69 Billion annually

One of the statistics that surprised me is that 7 out of 10 people who killed themselves in 2016 were white males.  This seems unusual in a way because this is the group that appears to be the most privileged in America.  You would think that they would have the least reason to want to kill themselves.  This brings to mind the saying that money doesn’t buy happiness.

Another disturbing statistic is related to deaths in the military.  More service members are killing themselves than are dying in combat.  Give that a minute to sink in.  According to the AFSP there were 295 combat-related deaths in the year 2012, which is a terrible loss of life.  Even worse though, in that same year were 349 service people killed themselves.  They also state that 20% of all suicides are committed by veterans.  Obviously, the military is not looking to broadcast this information.  It could have a negative effect on the morale of service people and public support, as well as for recruitment and retention.
