Z-Score Neurofeedback | Biofeedback Resources International

Thought Technology

BioGraph Z-Score Neurofeedback is used conjointly with Dr. Robert Thatchers NeuroGuide z-score feedback library, BioGraph can translate EEG connectivity metrics into much more intuitive z-score values. Because z-scores are what brain maps report on, neurofeedback becomes an easy task as the screen shows a moment-to-moment reading on how far a clients performance is from the norms.

  • Z-score outputs include absolute power, relative power, power ratio, amplitude asymmetry, coherence and phase difference. These metrics are available for eight bands including alpha, beta, delta, theta, high beta and beta I, II and III.
  • Any time during the training session, the clinician can click Pause and right-click over an instrument to select a different z-score metric or band to train with, on the fly.
  • Training screens show dual threshold bar graphs to allow practical range training.
  • Numeric displays can be programmed to follow bar graph color change on condition, to emulate NeuroGuide reporting.
  • All the feedback power of BioGraph is available to train from norms on-the-fly or use the z-scores for pre- and post-session assessment. Use measurements such as Percent of Time in Condition to report training results.

Benefits of Z-Score Biofeedback Add-on:

  • Real-time comparisons of 2-channel EEG to NeuroGuides normative database. Metrics include coherence, phase, amplitude asymmetry, relative power, absolute power and power ratios for eight different frequency bands.
  • Simple measure of progress is based on percent of time in condition.
  • In neurofeedback, this allows training directly using norms. In this approach, training is always towards norm instead of an arbitrary value that may be difficult to determine.
  • Can also be used in pre- and post- assessment of general connectivity training. In this approach, training can be directly on the metric, such as coherence, for example, whereas post-session analysis can include the Z-Score deviations of coherence from norm, all within BioGraph Infiniti.
  • Faster results: in both the above cases, multiple operations are combined as the need to export data from BioGraph and send away for Z-Score assessments is eliminated. The power is all in one place, and the strategy is always the same: train towards norm.

Other BioGraph 4.0 new features related to connectivity training

  • Change Z-Score settings on-the-fly.
  • Range training made possible by dual threshold instruments. Instead of above or below threshold, dual thresholds provide feedback for inside or outside range, which is much more useful in connectivity training protocols. Feedback logic can also be changed on-the-fly.
  • Industry-standard metrics for phase, and amplitude asymmetry to compliment our existing coherence metric.
  • Easier exporting to NeuroGuide software, such that BioGraph EEG data can be easily reviewed with all the analysis and reporting power of NeuroGuide beyond the Z-Scores.
  • Two-channel EEG cable for easier connections with common ground and reference.

Conquering Concussion Perfect Paperback | Biofeedback Training

This lively, well-researched, and hopeful book is an excellent primer for anyone dealing with TBI and its aftermath, from victims to caretakers. It is clearly written and illustrated for the average reader, but contains information that may be new to many healthcare professionals puzzled by odd and unresponsive symptoms and the realization that time alone does not heal the brain.

Conquering Concussion by Mary Lee Esty, Ph.D., and C. M. Shifflett presents history, new research, treatments, and 20 years of clinical case histories. These are real stories about real people struggling with post-concussion symptoms: terrible fatigue, headache and body pain, emotional swings, mental fog, insomnia, weight gain and balance problems. It shows how TBI symptoms overlap with other diagnoses such as ADHD and depression, and reveals the link with PTSD. It features neurotherapy, but presents additional therapies that can aid recovery. Topics include: Head injuries in history, from Henry VIII to Elvis Presley. What happens in concussion, the many symptoms that may appear, and problems with standard testing and treatments.

The origins, supporting research, and results of neurofeedback. Detailed case histories of children, adults, and soldiers with memory problems, severe head pain, insomnia, ADHD and PTSD. Medical issues which may need attention before symptoms of concussion can heal. The rest of the story: What happened to people in this book who never expected to work or function normally ever again. How they regained their skills, jobs, families and lives.

Biofeedback and Continuing Education for Psychologists

If you are a psychologist in the United States of America, depending on which state you are licensed in, you may need a few or a large number of continuing education credits each year to maintain your license.

There are many topics to choose from to study.  Some are an absolute must like ethics.  Others are optional.  Since subjects like brain plasticity and the poly vagal theory have really taken off over the last several years, subjects that incorporate mind body technology and therapy have become of more interest to psychologists.

Biofeedback uses instruments that measure and feedback signals from the body including surface EMG (Electromyograph) for muscle activity, skin temperature for peripheral blood flow, skin conductance for sweat activity, Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability for cardiovascular responses, and Respiration for breathing.  Neurofeedback uses instruments that measure EEG (Electroencephalograph) which measures and shows brain activity.  Through reinforcement the subject can learn to change the activity to improve mind-body wellness.  It can also be used to monitor changes to physiology caused by other therapy modalities.

With an accredited course a psychologist can receive continuing education credit while learning about biofeedback and neurofeedback or other mind body tools.  The BCIA, Biofeedback Certification International Alliance, offers certification in biofeedback and neurofeedback and maintains a list of accredited courses, some of which offer continuing education credit for psychologists.

There are also organizations that offer courses that include continuing education credit.  Some of them include mind body science and techniques like biofeedback and neurofeedback.  Here are a few of the organizations that I am familiar with.  I have attended courses at their conferences:

AAPB (The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback) aapb.org, NRBS (The Northeast Regional Biofeedback Society) nrbs.org, ABPsi (Association of Black Psychologists) abpsi.org, MABS (Mid-Atlantic Biofeedback Society mabs.us; Southeast Biofeedback and Clinical Neuroscience Association sebiofeedback.org.

Each of these organizations usually has at least one conference per year.  Some also do additional workshops and sessions that may include continuing education credit for psychologists and other license holders.  I prefer in-person sessions for learning as do many people.  I attend the face-to-face classes when they are available.  During the current pandemic many of the organizations had to at least temporarily suspend in-person conferences.  Some of them have been offering web based, virtual conferences and webinars.  These are also good and meet the need for learning and continuing education credit.  These are all good opportunities to learn more about how neuroscience and evidence-based mind body techniques fit into psychology and mental health care.
