Understanding Neurofeedback: Equipment, Training, and Professional Development

Neurofeedback is a cutting-edge technique used to train the brain to function more effectively, offering promising therapeutic benefits for a variety of conditions, including anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, and PTSD. By utilizing real-time feedback, neurofeedback allows individuals to learn to regulate brainwave activity, leading to improved cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. As neurofeedback continues to gain popularity, the demand for trained professionals and the appropriate neurofeedback equipment has grown significantly. This article explores the essentials of neurofeedback, including the equipment used, the training required for technicians, and opportunities for professional development such as APA Continuing Education credits.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also referred to as EEG biofeedback, is a process that measures brainwave activity and provides feedback to the individual to help them regulate their brainwave patterns. Through this feedback loop, individuals can learn to increase or decrease the amplitude of certain brainwave frequencies to promote optimal brain function. This non-invasive approach has been shown to have positive outcomes for a wide range of mental health and neurological issues.

During a neurofeedback session, sensors are placed on the scalp to monitor brainwave activity. The collected data is then sent to a computer system where it is processed and displayed in real-time, often as a visual or auditory cue. For example, the patient might be shown a video game or animation, where the game responds to their brain activity by speeding up or slowing down depending on their brainwave regulation.

The Role of Neurofeedback Equipment

At the core of every neurofeedback session is the neurofeedback equipment, which typically consists of EEG sensors, amplifiers, and software. The EEG sensors are the key components, as they detect electrical activity from the brain and send this data to a computer system for processing.

The quality of neurofeedback equipment plays a critical role in the effectiveness of the treatment. Modern neurofeedback systems feature advanced sensors that ensure accurate readings of brainwave activity, alongside sophisticated software designed to present the feedback in a way that is engaging for the patient. For example, there are different types of neurofeedback equipment suited for various purposes, from basic brain training to more specialized therapeutic uses such as neurotherapy for traumatic brain injuries or mood disorders.

When selecting neurofeedback equipment, it’s essential for practitioners to consider factors such as the number of channels (which corresponds to the number of areas of the brain being monitored), the software’s interface, and the overall usability and reliability of the system.

The History of Muscle Dysfunction and SEMG

Jeffrey R. Cram, PhD and Maya Durie, MEd, CMT

Abstract

The history of muscle pain and dysfunction is viewed through the lens of a four factor theory of histologic (tissue related) issues, psychologic (emotional) issues, sensory motor (movement) issues and biomechanical (postural) issues. The historical antecedents of both bodywork and surface electromyography are reviewed.

Key words: Surface EMG, SEMG, bodywork, trigger points, posture, emotions, movement.

Note: Parts of this article have appeared in The History of SEMG, Jour App Psychophys and Biof, In Press.

Humans have had to deal with sore muscles since the beginning of time. Initially, muscle assessments and treatments were conducted by hand and during the last century, the use of electronic instruments came into play.

To put muscle function and the clinical use of Surface electromyography (SEMG) into a perspective of history, is seems prudent to utilize a broad nomothetic net or conceptual framework. In Clinical Applications for Surface Electromyography, Kasman, Cram and Wolf (1998) consider chronic muscle dysfunction from a four fold perspective: Histologic (Tissue related issues); Psychologic (Psychophysiology and Emotions), Sensorimotor (Movement) and Mechanical Dysfunction (Cumulative Trauma, Posture etc). In this article we will provide a brief historical overview related to each of these four areas. This will provide a deep background for the emergence of the clinical use of SEMG, including information on the history of body work, psychophysiology, rehabilitation and the emergence of electricity and SEMG instrumentation.

We will begin with issues pertaining to the tissues of the body. The muscle, as an organ system, contains many sensory mechanisms. The muscle spindles tell the nervous system about the instantaneous length and force of contraction of segments of muscle tissue. The golgi tendon organ measures the actual force which the muscle is exerting and the rufini nucleus of the joints informs the nervous system of the relationship of angles of the bones. However, it is the free nerve ending within the muscle that senses local pain. And it is metabolic disturbances such as too much (lactic) acid or too much internal pressure due to swelling, congestion or edema, which activate the free nerve ending.

From a clinical point of view, up until the last two centuries, palpation and observations about movement and posture were the only tools available for assessing muscle oriented pain. Through the manual sense of touch, the practitioner can learn to feel many things. Is the muscle tissue hard to the touch? Does it feel stiff? Does it have lumps, tough fibers, etc. or is it soft, supple and relaxed? What does the fascia feel like? Is there a normal cranial-sacral rhythm? As you move the body passively through its range of motion, does it seem restricted suggesting a shortened muscle resting length? During active movement, does it appear that the body is using the correct muscles for the movement or is there a substitution pattern? Is the patient afraid of movement due to pain? Has a trauma become lodged in the nervous system or even the muscle tissue itself? Can one see or feel problems with ligament laxities or joint fixations? These are just some of the examples of questions we want to address, both by hand and by instrument. . Thus, one could think of body work as a means to help normalize the disturbance of tissue that might foster and create muscle pain and SEMG as an instrumented way of assessing some of these conditions.

Best Stress Booksfor Black People

Is there a need for a stress management book for black people?

There are plenty of books on stress management.  They should be good enough for everyone no matter what color right?  Stress is stress and how to reduce the negative effects should be the same for everyone, you would think.

There are a lot of differences in our backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and environments.  Some of these have nothing to do with the color of our skin and some do.

Some of the sources of stress for black people are the same as they are for other races.  Some of them are very different.  For people who are not black it is often hard to understand those stresses that seem to be unique to the race.  Some of the stressors are relatively small like other people being obviously uncomfortable getting on an elevator with you.  Others are much bigger like being racially profiled and being stopped for driving while black, being arrested, or shot unjustly.   Black people also are stressed due to discrimination related to education, employment, banking, and housing.

Not only are the sources of stress often different, the negative effects may also be more dangerous for black people.  The average book about stress doesn’t address these issues.

An example of a subtle educational source of stress is that most of the history taught about black people starts with slavery.  What a downer!  Black people are taught that they were stolen from Africa and placed into slavery.  Finally due to the kindness of some nice white people including Abraham Lincoln they were freed.  This does nothing good for self-esteem.  People from other cultures are often taught much more positive things about the history of their people.  They are usually taught about what their ancestors did in the countries they came from and why they came to America.  For black people there seems to be no history before slavery except that our ancestors came from Africa.  Even the way Africa is portrayed is negative.  We were fed images of jungles and savages with no organization or civilization.  Africa is talked about as though it is a single country when it is a continent made up of more than 50 countries today.  There is so much more for black students to learn about Africa, the specific countries, the history, people, inventors, scholars civilizations, etc. that would improve the self-confidence and self-worth of black people.  Not having that information is a source of stress.  Looking at other people and learning positive things about their history and cultures but not your own can make you feel less than other people.  There is no surprise that many people believe that this is all by design.  Books like The Mis-education of the Negro by Carter G. Woodson discuss this.

Mind Body Seminars

Although more people are now interested in mind body techniques like meditation, mindfulness, and yoga, there is still a great lack of clarity as to what the real effects of these techniques are.  It is also often difficult to know if a person practicing a technique is doing it correctly or getting the maximum benefit they can from it.
Several months ago, I was at a university in New York city visiting a meditation group.  The two people who were leading the group were interested in using EEG biofeedback equipment to measure the brainwave activity of people who were meditating.  They were interested in comparing the EEG activity of a novice meditator with that of a very experienced one.  This is one example of how technology can be used in combination with mind body techniques.  The idea was to see if there is a difference in what is going on in the brain while a person is meditating and does that vary depending on their experience level.
If a person attends a seminar to learn how to meditate, they might be doing their best to follow imagery instructions given by the teacher and may have difficulty experiencing what is being described.  They might also have many distracting and intrusive thoughts. During the training a person’s mind might be distracted and, or their body might be holding tension.  With biofeedback or neurofeedback instruments, evidence of this could be measured and used to help train the person more effectively.
If you are going to conduct any kind of mind body seminar it just makes sense to at least be able to demonstrate the changes that occur in the brain (EEG) as well as the body (biofeedback – breathing, muscle tension, heart rate, sweat, and skin temperature).  The whole program doesn’t necessarily need to incorporate technology but it can be helpful and instructive to both the students and teacher of the class.  Learning how to use this type of technology can be helpful for anyone who teaches any kind of seminars related to mind body work.  It also can be used as an intervention itself.  Biofeedback and Neurofeedback are interventions that use the technology and education therapeutically for symptoms including headaches, insomnia, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and pain.  They are an excellent adjunct for people who teach diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, autogenic relaxation, meditation, and mindfulness as well as other mind body techniques.

The Hidden Challenge in Alcohol and Drug Abuse

“Alcohol and drugs are essential to my creative process” is a thought, sometimes a confession made, usually privately, by millions of creative people, many of them at the pinnacle of success in their fields. Yet, I have heard very little serious discussion by substance abuse professionals about the profound implications of this phenomenon.

Some say that psychoactive drugs will be with us forever and maybe they will. However, my life improved immensely and was probably saved by my liberating myself from the pleasures, enthusiastic bursts of creativity and agonies of alcohol and smoke.

In fact, our society has declared a “war” on drugs and a sort of “police action” on alcohol. Humorous, isn’t it since far more damage is done in the aggregate by alcohol than by all other drugs combined?
As a society we believe that we must solve this catastrophic problem; or at least understand it enough so that we reduce the destructive pressure on our culture. Having come from a family of beautiful people who have been tragically impacted by alcohol and other drugs, I have had an intense interest in how and why this disaster happened to my dearest loves and beyond that to our civilization as a whole. What is the most effective way to heal the damage already done and reduce the problem in the future?

This led me into one of the most fascinating investigations of my life. I delved deeply into all of the conventional wisdom I could find… and I did most of my investigation while continuing to drink and smoke. I was what you call a highly functional substance abuser. In fact, my problem was never diagnosed by a professional or even a friend. I had to come to the realization that I had a substance abuse problem through self study.

Self study which involved a lot of EEG biofeedback and meditation.

Neurofeedback Equipment for Mental Health

Mental health symptoms and solutions are being openly discussed more than ever. Most days that I turn on the news I hear at least one story related to mental health. Just today I heard a report about three separate people who were survivors or a relative of a survivor of a school shooting who committed suicide. We often hear reports of the devastation across the country related to abuse of opioid drugs. Concussions caused by car accidents, slip and falls, sports injuries cause memory loss, behavior and mood changes as well as other problems. People are being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and prescribed medications that may have to be taken for the rest of their lives with potential side effects.

Neurofeedback equipment is being used as one therapy modality that can help with many mental health conditions. Healthcare professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, mental health counselors, social workers, nurses, chiropractors are using neurofeedback adjunctively with other therapies to help people with many of these mental health problems.  For more information on conditions that neurofeedback therapy is used for refer to Comprehensive Neurofeedback BibliographyD. Corydon Hammond, PhD.

The electrical signals that are produced by the brain are measured using a device attached to the person by sensors placed on the head.  The signals are separated into Delta, Theta, Alpha, (SMR) Sensory Motor Rhythm, Beta, and Gamma. During an assessment it is determined if there are imbalances in the brainwave activity. The same or similar neurofeedback equipment is then used to measure, give visual and or auditory feedback, and train the brain to produce more regulated or “normal” electrical patterns.

This usually will help to decrease the types of mental health symptoms mentioned earlier.

Neurofeedback Training For Traumatic Brain Injury

Brain injuries can be caused in many different ways. Whether they are diagnosed or not can depend on how severe they are, where they happen, who is around when they happen, and whether the injured person seeks medical care. Some of the sources of brain injuries include car accidents, sports injuries, slip and falls, physical fights and assaults among other things. When the brain is injured the electrical activity and function of the brain is affected. Neurofeedback training is a way to help to normalize the electrical activity of the brain which in turn helps improve function.

Some of the problems that may develop with a head injury include problems with memory, difficulty focusing, anger, and diminished self-control. Some of these problems are similar to what normal teenagers struggle with. This is often attributed to incomplete development of the front of the brain.

Interestingly, many people who suffer these symptoms also show abnormal EEG when tested with neurofeedback equipment. One of the patterns that is common is high amplitude delta and theta in the frontal areas of the brain. This seems to interfere with normal functioning and can be part of the cause of some of the symptoms. By using neurofeedback equipment to measure and feedback EEG information on a computer screen clients can learn to regulate their brain activity. After a series of training the EEG is often normalized and symptoms decreased.

Besides rest, there are relatively few effective treatments for brain injury. Neurofeedback training seems to be a good non-invasive therapy for brain injury.

Our complete certification training programs meet all didactic and mentored training criteria required by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America in order to take the certification exams. It is based on the BCIA blueprint for certification and recertification, and participants receive certificates for each seminar completed. Note we are fully qualified to do BCIA mentoring and some of the mentoring requirements are provided within our seminars at a fraction of the normal mentoring cost. However, the balance of the mentoring should be with the mentor that best suits your learning goals and circumstances. We can usually assist you in finding that mentor. Of course, often that mentor is part of our team.

For over 19 years we have been aggressively attempting to persuade the BCIA to make it easier and less expensive to get certified. We are encouraged because the BCIA board has made major steps in that direction. The expense and difficulty of getting BCIA certified has been substantially reduced and simplified by the board and we have, therefore, modified our seminars in order to immediately pass all of those advantages on to you.

How do I build a successful Biofeedback practice?

A personal sense of mission is the best foundation upon which to build success. Such a sense of mission about biofeedback may not be so hard to achieve because the tools which reduce suffering and enhance self knowledge are surely technology at its highest. Therefore, the better your training and equipment the quicker you will integrate this scientific art form with your own therapy style, the deeper will be your inspiration and the greater your enthusiasm. "Nothing of importance can be accomplished without enthusiasm." Emerson

There are two fundamental considerations:
  1. Acquiring the correct equipment and training.
  2. Making the economic aspects of your practice work.
The Economics Of Biofeedback

Some of our clients are so economically sophisticated that we consult with them so we can pass their expertise on to those who need it. However, many health care professionals need assistance in developing the business side of this science and art. General business knowledge for this field is relatively easy to come by, and we usually cover it in our seminars and with clients who acquire equipment from us. However, the most successful practices go beyond general economics to the acquisition of specific information that allows them to maximize their unique circumstances. Our consulting services meet this need and those who have used them report a high return on their investment. Biofeedback practices range from small adjunctive services comprising a small percentage of a particular health care enterprise to multi million dollar profit centers. Whatever your goals in this area, we can help you get there. Obviously, you can call us and we will answer questions for you until you feel you can make the best decisions for your circumstances.

Quick & Easy Stress Reduction Solutions – Part 4

In my last article I talked about how we can use our breathing to help us relax.  Here is the link my blog page where that article is if you missed it:  https://biofeedbackinternational.com/blog/

Here I will talk about another powerful relaxation tool that you can use with or without any physical tools.  Muscle relaxation is another tool you can use to quickly and easily relax.

Stress Reduction Solution #4 is Using Muscle Relaxation to Reduce Stress Book

We represent stress in our muscles.  As a reaction to stressful events we tend to contract our muscles and hold some excess tension in our muscles chronically.  This can lead to problems.

Muscles are intended to contract to either to cause movement of our body or to maintain posture.  A certain amount of muscle contraction is necessary to maintain posture so that you don’t fall over.  Additional contraction is necessary to move a part of your body.  Once the movement is over the muscle is supposed to go back to a resting state.

Muscles also contract in reaction to stress as part of the fight or flight response.  This is a normal reaction which is intended to prepare your body to respond physically to an emergency.   This is very helpful if there really is an emergency that requires a physical reaction like if a car jumped onto the sidewalk and you have to run for your life.  The extra tension in your muscles would allow you run faster, jump higher, and hit harder.  This reaction might save your life in a real emergency.

Here is the problem, your nervous system doesn’t tend to be smart enough to not react in the same way when you have a problem at work or you get stuck in traffic.  Your muscles contract as though you had to run, jump, or fight.  Since it is not necessary to react physically, that extra tension is not useful.  In many cases at least some of the extra tension doesn’t go away meaning that the muscles stay partially contracted for no useful reason.  When the muscles don’t go back to a resting state it can lead to pain.  The constant muscle contraction can also continue to send signals to the brain and nervous system to stay in an emergency mode which can cause you to feel stressed or anxious.  It can also be physically draining because the muscles are using resources and energy to maintain the contracted state.
