BCIA Certification Biofeedback Seminars

How can you determine if the biofeedback provider you are considering visiting is qualified?
One good way is to get a personal referral.  If you know someone who has had success with a biofeedback provider for a similar problem as your own then there is a good chance that you may also get good results and be happy with them too.  There are other things that you can do to get an idea as to their qualifications.  One of the best ways to determine qualification is to find out if the provider is BCIA certified.  What is the BCIA?  BCIA stands for Biofeedback Certification International Alliance.
The BCIA is the organization that establishes the rules for and provides certification in biofeedback and neurofeedback.  Here is their mission: “BCIA certifies individuals who meet education and training standards in biofeedback and progressively recertifies those who advance their knowledge through continuing education.”
They set the standards for who can become certified and the process that applicants need to go through to qualify for certification.  The requirements include minimum prior education, anatomy and physiology, specific biofeedback education, personal experience doing biofeedback on oneself and on others, mentoring of an experienced biofeedback professional, and an exam.
This is a serious process that many providers who are not as serious are not willing to go through.  The time and expense discourages them from going through what it takes to gain BCIA certification.  This does not automatically make a person who does not have BCIA certification not qualified to provide biofeedback but it makes it less likely that they are.
The specific biofeedback education is usually done in seminars.  There are some universities that offer biofeedback education but that is not widespread.  Usually what happens is a psychologist, social worker, mental health, chiropractor, or other health care provider learns about biofeedback and decides that they want to add it to what they do.  They attend a biofeedback training seminar that is accredited by the BCIA (not all are).  Next, they get their equipment and begin doing their practice sessions while working with a mentor to help them improve their abilities.  They study for and then take the BCIA exam.   Just attending the biofeedback seminar is not enough.  A student really needs to study in order to pass the exam.  This whole process can take anywhere from six months to two years.
The BCIA certification differentiates the serious practitioner from one who might just buy the equipment, read a book, and start advertising the service.
Just going through the whole BCIA certification process from attending the biofeedback training seminar through passing the exam helps to make the provider more qualified to provide services.  It takes a certain level of dedication to complete all of the requirements

Attention Or Sleep, Problems with Sleep related to ADHD


You wouldn’t want to have to make that choice for children.  Many children diagnosed with ADHD are prescribed medications to help with the symptoms.  Some popular medications in use are Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall.  These medications are helping some people.  The drug companies themselves are listing sleep problems as a possible side effect.
According to a November 23, 2015 online article in Pediatrics, research analysis led by Katherine Kidwell of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found that children given stimulants tended to have sleep problems more often.  One of the studies compared the sleep of children given methylphenidate (generic Ritalin) with children given a placebo.  The children who took the generic Ritalin slept an average of 20 minutes less per night.  They also found that taking a stimulant medication more often during the day caused a child to take longer to fall asleep at night.
Dr. Trevor Resnick, who is chief of pediatric neurology at Nicklaus Children’s  Hospital in Miami says that it is extremely important  that all children get a good night’s sleep for healthy brain development.  It is his belief that only a small percentage of children will develop problems related to ADHD medications though.

Theoretical Implications of Neurofeedback Integrating Bowen Theory

Simple statements often conceal a great deal of complexity. The notion that the brain learns from experience is one such statement. The brain develops the internal connections by fitting with the external world. Learning then can be defined as the struggle to make sense of human interactions. The efforts to integrate feeling and thinking, or values and impulses, are what gives each person their own unique self. Reflecting on much of life’s experience, furthers one’s goal and thereby enables humans to escape a deterministic world.
PET scans, MRI and EEG look at evidence that the brain does reflect the nature of relationship sensitivity, physical and emotional challenges and eons of evolution. For the EEG one arena, sleep states; have been very well documented. Eventually waking states of conscious will be as well investigated.
As in many areas of medicine much has been learned from symptoms. Diseases have taught us about the functioning of the different parts of the brain. Neither of the brain’s two information systems, chemical nor electrical has a one to one correspondence with functional states in the human. Rather the state of the body reflects the overall adaptation that any individual has made. Certain areas bind anxiety, and no one area can reflect a life history. An EEG may give us more insight into the overall way that feelings and thinking have been integrated and how we pay attention.

In 1929, Hans Berger measured the brain’s electrical activity. The activity was recorded in the form of line waves and now these same waves can be fed back to the brain as information. EEG Neurofeedback is a relatively new discipline that enables us to understand how the brain functions and also promotes the brain’s ability to learn from observing itself.

Neurofeedback has been documented to be useful for serious symptoms. People have been able to function after sever head trauma. Epileptics have been taught to reduce the severity and numbers of seizures. Headaches, and other types of physical pain, have been reduced. In addition to physical symptoms, emotional and physical symptoms, such as ADD, have been reported to decrease by Lubar, Tansy and others. There are a wide number of manufactures of equipment and most have reported positive results in working with various symptom groups.

Neurofeedback Training For Traumatic Brain Injury

Brain injuries can be caused in many different ways. Whether they are diagnosed or not can depend on how severe they are, where they happen, who is around when they happen, and whether the injured person seeks medical care. Some of the sources of brain injuries include car accidents, sports injuries, slip and falls, physical fights and assaults among other things. When the brain is injured the electrical activity and function of the brain is affected. Neurofeedback training is a way to help to normalize the electrical activity of the brain which in turn helps improve function.

Some of the problems that may develop with a head injury include problems with memory, difficulty focusing, anger, and diminished self-control. Some of these problems are similar to what normal teenagers struggle with. This is often attributed to incomplete development of the front of the brain.

Interestingly, many people who suffer these symptoms also show abnormal EEG when tested with neurofeedback equipment. One of the patterns that is common is high amplitude delta and theta in the frontal areas of the brain. This seems to interfere with normal functioning and can be part of the cause of some of the symptoms. By using neurofeedback equipment to measure and feedback EEG information on a computer screen clients can learn to regulate their brain activity. After a series of training the EEG is often normalized and symptoms decreased.

Besides rest, there are relatively few effective treatments for brain injury. Neurofeedback training seems to be a good non-invasive therapy for brain injury.

Quick & Easy Stress Reduction Solutions – Part 4

Here I will talk about another powerful relaxation tool that you can use with or without any physical tools.  Muscle relaxation is another tool you can use to quickly and easily relax.

We represent stress in our muscles.  As a reaction to stressful events we tend to contract our muscles and hold some excess tension in our muscles chronically.  This can lead to problems.

Muscles are intended to contract to either to cause movement of our body or to maintain posture.  A certain amount of muscle contraction is necessary to maintain posture so that you don’t fall over.  Additional contraction is necessary to move a part of your body.  Once the movement is over the muscle is supposed to go back to a resting state.

Muscles also contract in reaction to stress as part of the fight or flight response.  This is a normal reaction which is intended to prepare your body to respond physically to an emergency.   This is very helpful if there really is an emergency that requires a physical reaction like if a car jumped onto the sidewalk and you have to run for your life.  The extra tension in your muscles would allow you run faster, jump higher, and hit harder.  This reaction might save your life in a real emergency.

Here is the problem, your nervous system doesn’t tend to be smart enough to not react in the same way when you have a problem at work or you get stuck in traffic.  Your muscles contract as though you had to run, jump, or fight.  Since it is not necessary to react physically, that extra tension is not useful.  In many cases at least some of the extra tension doesn’t go away meaning that the muscles stay partially contracted for no useful reason.  When the muscles don’t go back to a resting state it can lead to pain.  The constant muscle contraction can also continue to send signals to the brain and nervous system to stay in an emergency mode which can cause you to feel stressed or anxious.  It can also be physically draining because the muscles are using resources and energy to maintain the contracted state.
