Stress Awareness and Biofeedback

Stress has become an almost normal experience for many people. There are many sources including the pressures of work, personal life, or just the overwhelming pace of modern society.   Stress can take a serious toll on both our physical and mental health. The good news is that there are strategies available to help us manage stress effectively, and one of the most interesting and scientifically proven methods is biofeedback. Here we will talk about stress awareness, its impact, and how biofeedback can be used as a tool to reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

What is Stress?

Stress is the body’s natural response to external pressures or demands, often referred to as “stressors.” These stressors can range from a tight deadline at work to personal challenges, financial issues, or even societal pressure. While some stress can be motivating and help us rise to challenges, chronic or excessive stress can have detrimental effects on our health.

When we experience stress, our body enters the “fight or flight” mode, releasing hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This response is designed to help us react quickly to danger. However, in modern life, stressors often do not require a “fight or flight” response, and prolonged activation of this system can lead to a variety of physical and mental health issues such as:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Sleep disturbances
  • High blood pressure
  • Weakened immune system
  • Chronic pain

Given the significant impact stress can have, it’s important to be aware of its effects on our body and mind and take proactive steps to manage it.

Four Reasons Psychologists Get Trained in Neurofeedback

There are still relatively few psychologists who are trained to provide neurofeedback services.

Here are four reasons some psychologists have decided to attend neurofeedback training.

  1. Many clients or parents of clients are looking for alternative methods of dealing with ADHD besides medications.  Young people and adults that suffer with ADHD symptoms are usually proscribed medications that often but not always help.  Unwanted side effects often cause people to seek other ways of dealing with the symptoms.  Neurofeedback has been shown to be effective in helping reduce symptoms of ADHD.  When compared to a normative database, the abundance of slow waves – Theta or Alpha to the faster waves is often too high.  Neurofeedback training can help normalize this activity and help with reducing symptoms.

  2. Psychologists see large numbers of clients with anxiety. Like with ADHD, clients with anxiety are often prescribed medications that might or might not be effective in managing symptoms and might also have negative side effects.  The brainwave activity of a person with anxiety is often different than those without anxiety.  In many cases the faster Beta waves show higher power than the average brain without the anxiety symptom.  Neurofeedback training has been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms by encouraging the brain to decrease the power in the faster Beta wave frequencies and increasing the slower Alpha wave frequencies that are associated with relaxation.

  3. Psychologists have a lot of clients who don’t sleep well.  Sleep problems can make many other problems worse.  Improving sleep can help to improve other seemingly unrelated problems.  When our eyes are open, our brain must process all the information that comes in through the eyes.  The brain is busier with our eyes open.  When we close our eyes, the brain has the opportunity to and should rest.  When the brain is in this resting state, it produces more Alpha waves.  If instead of allowing our brain to rest, we start to think about all of our problems, our brain doesn’t produce more Alpha waves.  It continues to produce mostly faster Beta waves.  If our brain continues to produce mostly faster Beta waves when we close our eyes it is harder to fall asleep.  We need slower Alpha and Theta waves to move into sleep.

Is Certification necessary in order to become a practitioner?

Technically no, at least not so far. In fact over 50% of practitioners are not certified and that includes some of the most successful in the field. Some of these uncertified practitioners could easily qualify for certification and some of them cannot.

Certification is a process, and fulfilling the requirements can take some time. The best strategy is to simply acquire the appropriate professional training such as the courses we offer, and simultaneously work on certification requirements. One does not get certified and then practice. The candidate gets started working with patients and then works down the certification requirements. We want to encourage all those who can qualify to go through the certification process. It can justify the cost and time from a marketing perspective alone.

What does a person need to learn to get started?

Depends on who you talk to. We have been answering this question from practitioners eager to get started since 1971. Biofeedback is already a vast and growing scientific art form. Obviously, one who hopes to master it is learning throughout his career.

  • Learning the basic traditional biofeedback or neurofeedback skills.
  • Acquire a comprehensive overview of the field.
  • Understand what additional training will be needed in order to achieve excellence and how to acquire that training.
  • Learn to operate equipment well enough to begin self training and the training of properly screened 'easy' clients.
  • Understand ethical and supervision issues.
  • Acquire enough training so that the potential practitioner can decide what equipment will serve their needs best.

Since 1971 we have brought professionals inexperienced in biofeedback to proficiency in short, inexpensive, intensive programs. As soon as the BCIA Certification Program was created we developed one of the most successful, time-tested and investment efficient BCIA Certification Training Programs in existence, and we are continuously improving it. We vigorously support the BCIA and urge everyone who can qualify to get certified as soon as it is practical.

Neurofeedback Integrating Bowen Theory

Theoretical Implications of Neurofeedback Integrating Bowen Theory

Andrea Maloney-Schara, LCSWA

11/4/97

Simple statements often conceal a pleasing arrangement of complexity. The notion that the brain learns from experience is one such avowal. The brain develops the internal friends by fitting gone the outside world. Learning along with can be defined as the trouble to make prudence of human interactions. The efforts to merge feeling and thinking, or values and impulses, are what gives each person their own unique self. Reflecting as regards much of vibrancys experience, furthers ones try and thereby enables humans to make off a deterministic world.

PET scans, MRI and EEG see at evidence that the brain does reflect the flora and fauna of relationship reaction, monster and emotional challenges and eons of innovation. For the EEG one arena, snooze states; have been utterly expertly documented. Eventually waking states of alive will be as adeptly investigated.

As in many areas of medicine much has been scholastic from symptoms. Diseases have taught us more or less the vivacious of the interchange parts of the brain. Neither of the brains two hint systems, chemical nor electrical has a one to one correspondence in the impression of than operating states in the human. Rather the pronounce of the body reflects the overall adaptation that any individual has made. Certain areas bind demonstration, and no one place can reflect a simulation chronicles. An EEG may manage to pay for us more quickness into the overall mannerism that feelings and thinking have been integrated and how we pay attention.

In 1929, Hans Berger measured the brains electrical ruckus. The insult was recorded in the form of stock waves and now these linked waves can be fed backing to the brain as reference. EEG Neurofeedback is a relatively supplement discipline that enables us to receive how the brain functions and in addition to promotes the brains gaining to learn from observing itself.

Neurofeedback has been documented to be useful for invincible symptoms. People have been adept to take effect after cut off head trauma. Epileptics have been taught to condense the depth and numbers of seizures. Headaches, and new types of swine painful feeling, have been condensed. In be neighboring to to physical symptoms, emotional and physical symptoms, such as ADD, have been reported to viewpoint by Lubar, Tansy and others. There are a broad number of manufactures of equipment and most have reported sure results in functioning gone various symptom groups.

Bowen Theory can go greater than symptoms to see at the associations system and abet a larger systems view of EEG and the role of learning in an emotional system. Symptom mitigation may suitably be the evidence needed to feat that EEG has merit. In the far afield ahead EEG may in reality be a window to showing off in the habit in to a broader systems approach upon the quirk in which attachment enthusiasm impacts of in leisure doings.

Bowen Theory points to the fact that an individual be swift as a share of an emotional system. The fact that live can be elaborate from one individual to substitute testifies to the increasing appeal in self-regulation and self promote. Individuals get sticking to of that demonstration is allocation of mammal enliven in a connections system and that altering the tendency to interest others trouble for the pleasure of sentient thing in deferential relationships as soon as unconventional is often not worth the price that will be paid

Neurofeedback Training Improve the Clinical Outcome

The following case histories may have useful implications for neurofeedback because they imply possible clinical effectiveness with immune disorders, anorexia, and obsessive, compulsive disorders. In addition the neurofeedback timing strategies used suggest that the length, frequency and total number of sessions may be as important in achieving best neurotherapy results as titration is in the administration of medications.

A Dangerous Obsession

He had reached an advanced stage of anorexia. As a 54 year old construction worker, he was normally 6′ and a well muscled 155 lbs. At the beginning of therapy he was 118 lbs., eyes sunken, somewhat manic, claiming his diet of mostly lettuce was making him high and filling him with energy. He was almost completely isolated as his behavior had destroyed his marriage and alienated him from his friends. He had not worked for five years at his trade as he was on disability. He was almost broke even though he earned between sixty and one hundred thousand per year when he was working. He was obsessed with a well known cult which had counseled him to distance himself from his family, and against seeking therapeutic help. He had invested over $200,000.00, virtually his life savings, in the cults system of “therapy and enlightenment.”

He discussed the possibility of suicide on several occasions in the beginning and was experiencing many stress related disorders including sleeplessness, irritability, hyperactivity, intense loneliness, and much obsessive/compulsive symptomology including going over and over often unimportant details. He fluctuated between overtly aggressive, hyper behavior as he tried to convert people to his ideas, and passively aggressive behavior when individuals attempted to establish relationship with him. A strong concern at the beginning of therapy was that irreversible organ damage might have already occurred because of his complexion, gaunt, haunted appearance and the obviously massive loss of muscle tissue, even though he continued to exercise vigorously (as is the case with many anorexics). Biofeedback therapy was for him a desperate last resort.

Within three weeks of beginning neurofeedback training (adjunctive to counseling) his demeanor had changed remarkably, he had begun to gain weight and he entered enthusiastically into the life rebuilding process. He began sleeping better, felt much calmer and more optimistic, less lonely and isolated. He began to form new relationships and he was opening up and talking to people in ways that were impossible before. He wanted to report on his “Love Stories”. An interesting example follows: He would go to playgrounds and sit and watch children play. This made him feel so happy at times that he would weep. This appears to be healthy abreactive phenomena happening hours or days after actual neurofeedback training. People he met or had known before seemed to be easier to be with. He saw that he had changed and was giving others the chance to be affectionate and not blocking them with his rigidity, restlessness and passive aggression. He began to eat a more balanced diet and gained weight reaching 150 lbs. within the first year.

How neurofeedback equipment works

Neurofeedback, a form of biofeedback, in its current form, it is a cutting-edge technology that allows people to train their brains for improved mental performance and well-being. At the heart of neurofeedback lies sophisticated equipment designed to monitor and regulate brain activity. Here’s a closer look at how this innovative technology works.

Neurofeedback equipment usually consists of sensors, amplifiers, and a computer interface. The process begins with the placement of sensors on the scalp, which detect electrical signals produced by the brain. These signals, known as electroencephalography (EEG), represent the brain’s activity in real-time.

Once the sensors are in place, the EEG signals are transmitted to the amplifier, where they are amplified and filtered to separate various brainwave frequencies. These frequencies, categorized into different bands such as alpha, beta, theta, and delta, are associated with various mental states and functions like excitement, focus, and relaxation.

The filtered signals are then fed into the computer interface, where advanced software analyzes the data and provides feedback to the user in real-time. This feedback often takes the form of audio or visual cues, such as tones or images, which indicate the current state of brain activity.

During a neurofeedback session, individuals are guided to regulate their brainwave patterns consciously. For example, if the goal is to improve focus and attention, the trainee might be instructed to increase the amplitude of beta waves while decreasing theta waves. As the individual successfully modulates their brain activity according to the feedback, they receive positive reinforcement, reinforcing the desired patterns.

Neurofeedback equipment types

Home devices like the Muse are small and lightweight. Most are less than $400. I am still not convinced of the signal quality of these devices. They don’t tend to display a raw signal so it is difficult to tell if there is noise in the signal that would negatively impact the quality of the training. The feedback is based on changes in EEG. If the changes are due to noise and not real EEG, then the reinforcement would not be effective. When I have tried these devices in the past, my experience has been that the feedback is not clearly connected to the changes in my mental states. Other people have given me mixed reviews, some more positive, some negative. There are a few ways that these devices are used. One is for clients who are seeing a professional neurofeedback provider for in office sessions. They use the home device between office sessions. A second use if for virtual training with a professional. The client has the device at home and the professional coaches them virtually. The third use is for non-professionals to use at home on their own without supervision.

2-4 channel systems like the Thought Technology Procomp-2 or Brainmaster Atlantis 2 or 4 channel systems are mostly used for in office sessions by professional neurofeedback providers. They are also sometimes used for home training. They provide much more reliable signals with raw signals displayed. These systems cost $1,600 – $3,500. They are designed for professional use and are regulated by the FDA for safety.

20 channel systems like the Brainmaster Discovery 20/24 do everything that the 2-4 channel systems do plus they are also used for 19-channel EEG recordings for brain map reports for initial and follow up assessments. The brain maps are usually done prior to the start of neurofeedback training with clients. The cost of these systems ranges from $8,000 – $17,000. They wouldn’t be appropriate for home training due to the cost.

32+ channel systems do a form of brain mapping and neurofeedback referred to as high density because they are using more electrode locations. This allows for more specificity because they electrodes are closer together so smaller areas can be measured. This is not used as commonly in the neurofeedback field, though I expect that to change in the years to come.
